Jury finds Juneau, Alaska man guilty of drug conspiracyA Juneau, Alaska man was found guilty of a federal drug conspiracy charge Thursday in a case resulting from the seizure of more than a pound of cocaine from a car driven off a ferry in August.
Richard Sheakley Jr., 35, is scheduled to be sentenced the week of April 26, along with his mother, Frances Ann Sheakley, and two acquaintances, Guillermo Rivera-Campos and Oscar Gonzalez-Alvarado. All but Richard Sheakley agreed to plead guilty to drug conspiracy on Feb. 13, the last working day before the trial was to begin in U.S. District Court in Juneau, Alaska.
Richard Sheakley's trial before U.S. District Judge Ralph R. Beistline began Tuesday. The case went to the jury Thursday morning. Jurors returned the guilty verdict in the early afternoon.
The Southeast Alaska Narcotics Enforcement Team announced the arrests of the Sheakleys and Rivera-Campos in August.
According to Juneau, Alaska police reports, officers received information from local airport security that Richard Sheakley had suspicious airline reservations for Seattle on Aug. 19, 2003. During the follow-up investigation, the Alaska Marine Highway reported that the Sheakleys had reservations for a vehicle to be delivered from Bellingham, Wash., to Juneau, Alaska state court records show.
The vehicle arrived in Juneau on Aug. 26., driven off the ferry by Rivera-Campos. Police served a search warrant on the vehicle. Alaska officers reported finding 588 grams - nearly 1 pound, 5 ounces - of cocaine, according to Alaska state court records.
SEANET also served a warrant on the Sheakleys' residence. The records show it resulted in the seizure of more cocaine, as well as mushrooms, marijuana and cash.
The Sheakleys were arrested with Rivera-Campos. Gonzalez-Alvarado was later added as a defendant in the case. The federal charges were filed Sept. 17.
All four defendants were being held at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center. Drug Rehab by County
