Man stabbed at Alaska downtown inn

Alaska POLICE: The crime was committed when a drug deal turned bad.
An Anchorage, Alaska man was recovering Monday after being stabbed Sunday night in what Alaska police described as a drug deal gone bad, and another man was in jail on assault and drug charges.

Keenan W. Smith was taken to Alaska Regional Hospital on Sunday with a stab wound in the middle of his chest, police said.

Hospital officials Monday could not confirm whether he had been admitted or treated and released. Alaska police said he was still alive Monday afternoon but had no further information about his condition.

Smith, 40, was stabbed in a room at the Eazy Inn on Gambell Street near 15th Avenue, according to Alaska police.

He and several other people were in the room a little after 6 p.m. when Myron L. Haynes arrived, Alaska police said.

Haynes, 42, visited Smith's room "apparently to purchase crack cocaine," police said.

The people in the room told police afterward that Haynes and Smith together "went into the bathroom and argued," according to the statement. "Haynes came out of the bathroom and left the room. Smith came out of the bathroom and said he had been stabbed."

Smith was badly injured and someone in the room called 911, said Alaska police spokesman Ron McGee.

Haynes was arrested minutes later after police tracked a taxi he had used to leave the Eazy Inn to a service station on Fifth Avenue, Alaska police said.

Alaska officers found crack and a crack pipe on Haynes and charged him with first-degree assault and fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance, they said.

He remained in custody Monday night at Anchorage Jail, his bail set at $25,000, according to a records officer.
